Every beauty brand now claims to “repair,” “strengthen,” or “restore” the skin barrier. But how many can actually prove it? Formulators face a practical problem: they can describe the problem (damaged barrier, dehydrated, irritated skin), they can formulate a solution, but they lack a reliable way to measure whether their solution actually works before committing to expensive clinical trials.
That’s where TEER comes in.
What Barrier Damage Actually Is
The skin barrier is the tight arrangement of epithelial cells linked together by tight junctions. When it’s compromised, that arrangement breaks down. External irritants penetrate more easily. Water loss increases. Skin becomes inflamed, irritated, dehydrated, flaky – often paradoxically oily as well.
Causes range from external (over-cleansing, pollution, UV exposure) to inherent (genetics, ageing, skin conditions). The common denominator is that the barrier’s ability to protect and retain moisture is lost.
Formulating a solution is one thing. Proving it works is another.
How TEER Measures Barrier Recovery
TEER (trans-epithelial electrical resistance) measures the electrical resistance across epithelial cell layers – essentially quantifying tight junction integrity. A low-frequency current is applied across the cells. The easier that current flows, the lower the TEER value. A reduced TEER value means a compromised barrier. An intact barrier has higher resistance.
What makes TEER valuable for formulators is that it’s non-destructive and can be monitored over time – minutes, hours, or days – without disrupting the tissue. You can apply your ingredient or formulation and watch the barrier response in real-time.
Why This Matters
You can test whether your ceramide blend actually strengthens barrier function. You can compare two formulations and see which one delivers better barrier recovery. You can screen ingredients before committing to clinical trials, eliminating candidates that don’t deliver the barrier benefit you’re claiming.
TEER data adds weight to mildness testing and provides mechanistic evidence for barrier-related claims. For regulators and consumers increasingly skeptical of unsubstantiated “barrier repair” marketing, this data matters.
Getting Started
TEER testing works best as part of a broader formulation screening strategy, paired with mildness testing and other barrier assessments. If you’re developing a barrier-support product and need to know whether it actually does what you claim, get in touch.
