Our Test of the Month for October is OECD TG 492B, one of the most complete non-animal methods currently available for eye hazard classification.
Its biggest advantage is simple: TG 492B can distinguish between Category 1 serious eye damage, Category 2 eye irritation and No Category within a single testing approach.
In our latest blog, we look at why that matters in practice, when TG 492B may be the better choice, and how it can help streamline eye irritation testing from the outset. With it being our Test of The Month, we are offering special discounted prices throughout October. Speak to us to request a quote!
Why choose TG 492B?
The precursor test to TG492B was the OECD TG 492, a test that identifies chemicals not requiring classification and labelling for eye irritation or serious eye damage. This remains a valuable method, particularly where there is good reason to expect a No Category result. However, if the result falls outside this category then further testing is needed to determine a complete classification.
TG 492B uses similar reconstructed human cornea-like epithelium as TG492, but follows a ‘time-to-toxicity’ approach measuring tissue viability over time, allowing for a more accurate classification by discriminating the three UN GHS categories for serious eye damage/eye irritation. The test method was recommended as a full replacement to the in vivo Draize acute eye irritation test for classification of chemicals.
For development teams, the practical benefit is straightforward: if the likely classification is uncertain, choosing TG 492B upfront can reduce the risk of completing one study only to discover that more are still needed.
That can make it especially useful for novel ingredients, new or reformulated products, substances where either irritation or serious eye damage is a realistic possibility, and projects where sample availability or timelines are tight.
In those situations, one method capable of resolving the full range of outcomes can mean fewer testing steps, less sample committed to follow-up work and a more straightforward route to the classification you need.
Why test with XCellR8?
We run OECD TG 492B to GLP under our MHRA accreditation and in fully animal-product-free conditions.
We can also help you decide whether TG 492 or TG 492B is the more appropriate route before the study begins, so that your testing strategy is built around the information you ultimately need rather than creating unnecessary follow-up work.
Throughout October, OECD TG 492B is our Test of the Month, with special pricing available for studies ordered during the month.
